DIY'ers: I have the proof. Say it out loud:
Nothing is beyond hope.
Oh really? Don't believe me? Well, this lamp came pretty close.
I almost threw it away. Y'all....it was SO UGLY!! There was nothing I liked about it. Not.A.Single.Thing. Sad, I know.
But just like in real life, some things most things require patience. I had to let this one sit for a while. I thought that maybe with a little bit of time, the creative juices would start flowing and I would come up with a plan to make it look better. Well, it sat...and it sat...and it sat....for a very...long...time...
And then it sat half-finished for even longer than that. Have you ever tried to find an affordable lampshade for something so large? Why are lampshades so ridiculously expensive anyway?
I really thought the lamp was doomed.
But then the Habitat Re-Store came to my rescue and I finally found a shade big enough at a decent price...it just needed a makeover as well.
{I HIGHLY recommend a visit to the Habitat Re-Store if you live anywhere near one!}
So, at long last, after at least 6 months of sitting, the lamp is completely made-over.
Material List: one retro-fabulous lamp, one cheap lampshade, spray primer and spray paint of your choosing, dark stain for glaze, sandpaper for distressing, jute rope {at least 300 feet, yes three-hundred, no lie}, hot glue gun, hot glue sticks, scrap burlap for rosettes, decorative ribbon, fancy thumb tacks or buttons, and a TON of patience. Oh, a glass of wine and a good TV show wouldn't hurt either. This will come in handy when you spend a couple hours wrapping up the shade with the rope.
Ok, so what did I learn? Nothing is beyond hope. Not an ugly lamp. Not a project that sits for half a year. Not anything in our lives. Not a dream, not a vision, not a person, not a prayer.
There is nothing worthy to be given up on.
Ok? I love you guys!

I had the same Idea(never implemented though) but with Knit and Crochet to give some color. But it is actually nice to see in implementation :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing your idea....fantastic. I can afford tabacco twine for sure {or as you call it - jute} Now, I can finally pretty up my lampshades to my beautiful milk glass lamps. They have sat quite a long time as well as I try and find the shade I wanted; but could not afford.
